Description

The Brenner Pass is one of the three main European Alp crossings (the other being Gotthard and the Lötschberg-Simplon line). It runs from Innsbruck (Austria) up to Brenner down to Bozen (Italy), and consists of a railway line, a motorway and also an old pass road that is popular with bikers these days.

The summit at Brenner/Brennero is pretty much equally shared between Italy and Austria, but the bulk of the village lies in Italy and all the rail operations, no matter what side of the he border they're on, belong to Trenitalia. The electrification is split in the middle, though, with the north part using Austrian 15 kV AC and the south part using Italian 3 kV DC. ÖBB's 1116 274 is here parked right at the end of the 15 kV area, which is a good thing because it can't run in the other part. I just loved the view of it with the snow-covered mountains in the rear.
