The DR class 130 (nicknamed "Ludmilla") and all it's derived types, most notably and numerous the DBAG class 232, looks good in just about any paint scheme one has ever thrown at it. Still, the best it ever had, in my opinion, remains the bordeaux red livery of Epoch IV.

Epoch IV is a german model railroading term meaning the time from 1970 (in the GDR, which is relevant here. In the west it started 1968) to either 1990 (german re-unification) or 1994 (DB and DR merged to DB AG), depending on what definition you use. The paint scheme that the Ludmillas wore in that period is no longer seen in DB service. A number of private railroad companies have bought used Ludmillas, and some, such as EfW here, have reverted theirs to their original glory.

232 088 is standing here almost exactly at kilometer 50, just outside Langerwehe station, with a train full of concrete sleepers for track maintenance between here and Eschweiler. All the running to catch it in the heat was no fun, but I think it was worth it.

On my homepage

By the way, yesterday was the birthday of my sister :iconseptdeneuf: (I had kind of hoped to still be able to post this before midnight, but 12:00 PM saw me in a train somewhere between Eschweiler and Stolberg instead). I won't post a specific train picture, as she's not into that so much, but why don't you head over there, congratulate her and check out her gallery?

Von der Farbgebung her ist das echt die schönste Ludmilla, Kompliment! Konnte man nicht näher ran?

Also check out The Best of shenanigan and rath0r ^^

Stimme ich voll und ganz zu, und danke für das :+fav:! :) Zum Thema näher ran, nein, wie ich schon per MSN sagte ist das wegen dem Gras blöde.

It kills me every time I see a diesel train running under wires. How much fuel could be saved every day by retrofitting diesel engines with the equipment to use the juice on electrified mainlines? Bare minimum, it would improve the air quality at Heidelberg, Mannheim, Frankfurt, and other stations that serve electric and diesel trains.

Thanks!

Well, this is a MOW train, so I guess there's no way to do these practically with electrics. I heard at least the french dual-mode train that was tested turned out to be not all that great, as it requires a lot of extra equipment that is just dead weight either in electric or in diesel mode.

I'm not sure if I already told this, but during the oil crisis, the DR actually considered rebuilding at least some of their Ludmillas to electrics, but ultimately just bought new electric locomotives.

Thank you for the :+fav:! :)

Yeah, I'm sure that the weight and volume constraints would make it less practical to have both aboard. It always seems to surprise me just how much volume is taken up by the guts of an electric locomotive in the first place. You'd think that without a prime mover, they could be made with much smaller carbodies...
:iconzcochrane:
Well, they do. A class 101, 152, 182 or 189 locomotive has the same power output as two EMD SD70ACe, but is significantly smaller than a single large diesel. Still, the transformer and the various traction alternators do take up a lot of space.

Yeah, I was just comparing modern German electrics to DB's diesel fleet, which all seem to be quite similar in size. You're right though, America's big power are gigantic compared to most electrics despite the lower horsepower.
