Yesterday, I went into the Aachen backwoods, which are surprisingly back and full of wood, and shot freight trains. We are quite in the middle of europe here: The other end of the tunnel is in Belgium, and it's not even two kilometers to the Netherlands either. In fact, there's a good chance the end of this train here hasn't reached Germany yet.

A mixed freight train comes through the Gemmenicher Tunnel, pulled very slowly by a german class 241.8. I just love those old russian diesels, they still look and sound as powerful as they are.

Why diesel on an electrified route? Does this particular train serve a terminal that has no catenary?
The tunnel and everything after it (i.e. the belgian side) isn't electrified, so one has to use diesel. The german side is electrified so that long trains can use electric helpers.

However, they are currently installing overhead wire in the tunnel and on the belgian side of the route. If all goes well, the huge diesels will be gone by the end of the year - which is why I try to get pictures of them now, while I still can.

Güter auf die Bahn!
I remember seeing one "Ludmilla" engine during my 2002 Hamburg visit pulling a military train, and figured I wouldn't see them again. It's amazing how they've lasted.
Absolutely. What I find most interesting is that DB got rid of the 4000 hp version, but later turned around and converted some others to 4000 hp (which results in precisely the class 241 seen here) because it turned out their initial plans were completely wrong.

It's my favorite diesel engine, and I think there are at least three or four others on DA who think the same. Given the comparatively low amount of german railroad fans here, that's quite a lot.

It looks like on the borderline Germany-Poland. Intercity "Berlin-Warschau Express" between Fankfurt n. Oder and Rzepin are runned by diesel locomotive, and then they're pulled by electrific again :)

Probably it's because of old border bridge on Oder river. They'll build another one...

Greetings :D
Have you seen military train? Amazing... :)
Yeah, and the different electricity is a problem as well, of course. The passenger department of DB has no locomotives that are capable of multiple systems, so even if the bridge is rebuilt, they'll still need to change. Quite a waste of time, I think.
