Junction

Hohen Neuendorf is a town to the north of Berlin, and firmly part of the "Speckgürtel", the series of towns that lie just outside Berlin and were historically where well-off Berliners moved if they wanted to have a garden. They sort of blend into one another - behind me is Birkenwerder, another town of the same kind, and there is almost no room between them now.

Among other things, these towns are all characterized by good rail connections. There are radial lines connecting them to the center (here the Prussian northern line, which ends in the North-South S-Bahn tunnel), and there is the Berlin Outer Ring, a line that takes the scenic detour around western Berlin and passes through many of the towns. I am not exactly sure what lines each of the parts of this junction belong to, to be honest. I'll have to look it up later.

The reason I'm in Hohen Neuendorf is that I have family here where I can stay the night, which makes trips into Berlin a lot more pleasant. So that should give you an idea of my plans for tomorrow.

Here, a class 481 S-Bahn train is heading from Hohen Neuendorf to Birkenwerder, avoiding a long-distance rail junction via an elaborate fly-over.
