The british "Pacer" was a project to build cheap DMUs by using mainly bus components on a cheap two-axle chassis. Whether this was a success or not is still unclear, twenty years later. They are cheap, which was the goal, but offer a very rough ride for the passengers. No new ones have been built since the eighties. An interesting aside is that even the cheapest british DMUs have high-level entries, while most other nations favor low-level entries for infrequently travelled lines, because that way it is not necessary to have a high platform.

Train 140 001, which is the only of the 140 class, was the prototype for the entire category. At the moment it's sitting at the endpoint of the Keith and Dufftown railway in Scotland, waiting for better days to come. For the time being, I guess it isn't going anywhere.

Taken July 2007.

Das ganze ist sogar ein Museum. Hilft dem armen Fahrzeug natürlich nicht wirklich weiter.

Ha ha.
This just shows how bad British Railways are these days.
You go to any station in the U.K. and it's pretty much certain you will see a 142 class!
My god we suck!

looks like it's being used as am office... those walkways look mighty permanent.

I dunno... whada you think?
what is it being used as, by the look of those walkways and the junk under the wheels, I don't think its going anywere.

Proud to be a US Steam fan :flagus:
Indeed. In fact, there are no rails before or behind it (the ones before seem to have been demolished on purpose). I'm not certain why they need this as an office, given that they have a perfectly nice station building all to themselves, but maybe it's storage space or occasionally used for exhibitions.

Gee, at least 142s look relatively clean and nice. 140 just looks absolutely no good at all... :(

I rather like the tatty, run-down appearance of that one, its quite endearing :)
