The title of this deviation is supposed to be Zukunft Erleben - Science Express, but DA does not allow that, so I had to shorten it.

At the moment you can see this train standing in Aachen central station, showing an unusual but not unpleasant paint scheme on class 110 locomotives. The red sign, by the way, indicates that this track is closed for all traffic at the moment, making the train something of a permanent fixture.

This is the "Expedition Zukunft" (Expedition Future, it really does not make more sense than that) "Science Express" project, which is a rolling exhibition showcasing current trends in science, new technology and the like to the general masses. It's a cooperation between the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung, BMBF), several research institutions and several private companies, done to celebrate that 2009 is the official year of science in Germany.

Railway-wise, it's very interesting. The 110s (there are two, although I've seen only one of them in Aachen) have received new liveries, even covering up the engine room window. The cars are all former baggage or bicycle cars remodelled, and the remodelling worked very well. You constantly feel as if there is much more space than a normal UIC Type-X carriage should have thanks to great use of light, mirrors and colors. At about 300 m (990 feet) useable length it's quite a walk, though. By the way, although the train is stationary, the locomotive is quite active and has the pantograph raised to generate electricity for it all.

Content-wise, it's like the Expo 2000 on wheels - the boring parts in particular. The exhibition (which is bilingual in german and english, by the way) stays vague and refuses to deal with any topic in much depth. It's nice to get an overview, but if you just follow normal science news regularly, then you won't find anything shocking. Still, it's nicely done and if you can spare the hour it takes you to go through it all, it certainly won't make you more stupid. See where it'll go next on the official homepage.

Go ahead, make my day!

It is quite a pleasant colour scheme, even though I'm not really in favour of multi-colour schemes.

Are the carriages painted the same way as the 110, or are they just plain white ?

What we were yesterday makes us what we are today, and what we are today makes us what we will be tomorrow.

I do like the livery of the locomotive seen here, makes a real change from the normal traffic red scheme which is normally seen on such locomotives, the locomotive here looks fresh and well cared for. Not that the DB ones don't, but this looks near enough brand new with the paintjob and everything.

How long will the exhibition stay in Aachen for?

Sieht sehr schick aus, ich hoffe ich erwische den Zug in Ulm oder Stuttgart.
:iconzcochrane:
Ja, es dauert natürlich noch ein bisschen bis er dort ankommt. Danke für das :+fav:! :)

They are painted the same way as the locomotive.

Thank you for the :+fav:! :)

Today is the last day. It's going to be seen all over Germany until November, staying three days in each station.

Thank you for the :+fav:! :)

Gerne und ja, dauert wohl noch ein wenig.

After it's run has expired will it be stored for further use, or split up and passed to preservation? I imagine the former would be an economical decision to make, such a train could have many uses in the future, if it doesn't remain as a science exhibition unit.

You're welcome for the :+fav:, as always. :)
