There's not a single car to much on this train passing through Cologne Trade Fair/Deutz station. Acceleration won't be a problem here.
I'm pretty certain this train had the main job of getting the car from the huge train operation center west of Cologne Trade Fair/Deutz to the huge train operation center north of Cologne Main Station, a distance of about a kilometer. You don't normally see class 101 on shunting jobs, but there's a good chance it was supposed to go there as well for one reason or another. But you have to admit, it looks funny.
Seems like the 101 is rather successful, especially as it was only meant as a stop-gap measure to replace failing older units until all intercity traffic could be converted to ICE EMUs (a plan that seems to have been abandoned mostly).
I think I heard somewhere that NJT was going to buy more of these, is that correct?
