Thalys operates two types of trains: The Thalys PBA (standing for Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam) and the Thalys PBKA (with the additional K standing for Köln, i.e. Cologne). Only the latter type is ever seen in Germany, because the PBA, being essentially a normal TGV Réseau in the three-system version (which also comes to Brussels in TGV colors), can’t run east of Aachen. Hence, it was a welcome change to spot one of the PBAs here in Brussels South (Midi).

Behind the mirror wall in the background, by the way, was at least one Eurostar bound for London St Pancras, but it is completely impossible to take good pictures of the train. While anyone has free access to the fastest trains of France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, and can go without questions asked to trains headed also for Luxemburg and Switzerland, that will clearly not do for the United Kingdom, which is something special. Instead you have to go through a passport control before you are let to the trains, which can (priority depends on ticket price) take up to an hour.

It's actually very convenient for passengers arriving on Eurostars to transfer to Thalys though, because there's a separate immigration stand under the platforms for Eurostar passengers transfering to Thalys. When one disembarks, there are signs with the Thalys logo on the Eurostar platforms pointing to a ramp that leads to the checkpoint. It took me all of 5 minutes to get off the Eurostar and get onto the Thalys platform to catch my train to Cologne.
:iconzcochrane:
That’s interesting. I did not notice any provisions for Thalys passengers to get into Eurostar more easily, and Eurostar’s own website recommends a transfer time of one hour in Brussels. Of course, I wouldn’t be surprised if the british government is just more scared of outsiders than the continental european ones.

It's mostly to keep Rabies off the island...despite the fact that wild foxes have occasionally walked or ridden through the tunnel and brought rabies onto the island.

I wonder if that huge mirror on the wall has any specific function. kinda pull my interest.
:iconzcochrane:
None that I am aware of, it seems to be just a design element on the station. However, I can't say that for certain.

Yes as ~irwingcommand said welcome to our world, this is much the case at St Pancreas, passport control to get to trains.
