Seeing an open door on a running train is nothing unusual, especially on a hot day, such as yesterday in Neuss Central Station. With three open doors, only two of which lead to the cab, one might say that 294 893 of DB Schenker (notice that although this paint scheme is newer than the one on 185 206, it is outdated already) overdoes it, though.

So the engine compartment door can also double as an air scoop? Novel design... :D

I'm honestly not sure if it's meant that way, but it seems to work - or at least be used. :D

Thank you for the :+fav:! :)

Perhaps this locomotive is having cooling system issues. Back in the 1950's and 60's on the New York Susquehanna & Western Railroad, they used to keep ALL the engine compartment doors open during the summer to keep their RS1's and S2's from overheating. On at least one occasion, a crew had to stop at the former depot at Sparta to take on water from what was once the railroad's water tank to refill an overheated locomotives cooling system. The conductor took a photo of it and its in a softcover book on the NYS&W published by Carstens. I will admit its wierd to see a locomotive taking water from an old steam era water tank. But seeing NYSW ALCO's with all the engine compartment doors open banging around and flapping in the breeze was once a everyday occurrence on the NYSW.

Interesting thought. Yes, this could be possible. The machines of this class are already rather old, and replacements should arrive starting next year, so maybe the cooling had failed in some way.
