In case you're wondering: Spirit Day is a day to raise awareness of bullying and to fight it. It started out as something primarily for the LGBT community, but has expanded to cover all bullying since.
I became aware of it due to 's long and personal journal about this (there's also a banner at the top of every DA page, but if you're like me, there's a good chance that you've stopped looking there), and decided that I wanted to join, too. I generally don't feel comfortable discussing my private life online, and I'm not going to start now, but I did have some experience with bullying. It was nowhere near as extreme as it was for many others, but still, not nice.
Personally, I'm not sure that I actually believe in Spirit Day. Can something like that help? I don't think there are any people out there who believe that bullying is a good thing, so raising awareness that it's bad and hurtful can only do so much. It's the bullies you need to reach and stop, and that is not easy. The reasons why people bully are quite diverse, after all.
That being said, awareness is the first step to solve this issue, no matter how many else will have to come, and I do want to support that.
Also, I wanted to see what my avatar looks like with a purple background. Apparently the answer is "totally hideous" (making the locomotive purple too looses too much contrast, and only the locomotive purple doesn't look any better), but it's for a good cause…

Canadian Winter Module - Construction
As you may have noticed, I just posted some deviations of a new model railroad module (following the T-Trak standard) that I built, and I promised to write something about how I built it. Here's that. For this one, I started with a detailed plan. I don't always do that, but I had a good idea what I wanted here, and if I don't do the plan ahead of time then I'll have to do it in the middle of building things. Here, I used GoodNotes on my iPad. It's okay, but honestly not great for that purpose. If you have a good recommendation for an iPad app that does sketches with scale well, please let me know! It's not pretty, but it does the job for me, and that's the most important part. (If you do want to build your own module according to these plans, feel free, but I can't promise I can help you. It's designed for 6mm plywood) Eagle-eyed viewers familiar with T-Trak will notice that I set the tracks 58 mm from the front, instead of 38, which is the standard. That's a choice I made on my
Ruebelandbahn
The title of this is supposed to be Rübelandbahn, but DA won't let me type that. Anyway… I did talk about the Rübelandbahn a few times before, but I figured there was room to do a more thorough description of what it is and why it is the way it is. To explain all of this, I'll have to start by explaining Germany. …look, there are reasons why I never post any fan art for anything here. I'll try to explain the basic geography anyway. Germany is roughly rectangular and a bit taller than wide (longer in north-south direction than east-west), and in terms of landscape it’s largely divided into two main parts: The north is essentially one giant big flat plain. There’s also a bit of coast and some rivers, but generally no notable mountains or anything. The southern half, on the other hand, is filled essentially completely with medium-sized hills and mountain ranges, the “Mittelgebirge” (literally middle mountain ranges). The higher peaks in them reach generally up to the 800-1200 m above
Model railroad signal decoder
I've posted this everywhere else, so I figure, why not put it here as well? In the past few weeks I’ve built a model railroad signal for garden railways with a custom DCC decdoder. Here’s what it looks like: I’ve heard from a number of people that they thought this was interesting, but they didn’t really understand what I was doing. So today I’ll try to explain the core of it all, this circuit board: And here’s the associated circuit diagram: I’ll try to explain why this is the way it is and what it does. (This whole explanation is aimed at people who have never done anything with electronics before. If that’s not you, then this may be a bit boring. Also, I didn’t come up with any of the parts of this. Most of this is based on things I learned by reading OpenDCC and Mikrocontroller.net. I’m sure I still made a lot of mistakes, though, and they’re definitely all mine and not the fault of anyone on these sites.) The goal First let’s talk about requirements. My goal was to build an
History of Berlins railway system
Berlin is an interesting city to me. While some European capitals, like Paris or Vienna, clearly express a more or less well executed plan, and others like London just seem to sort of happened, Berlin has a history of grandiose plans that never get fully realised because funding runs out or the political situation changes drastically, until the next big plan comes along. This continues even to this day. A good example of that is the railroads of Berlin, a topic that I find interesting but that is never really described as a big picture thing anywhere. The modern day scenario seems simple at first: There is a central railway station, and then a lot of minor ones. But if you look into it, you realise that this central station looks nothing like the historic terminal stations elsewhere, or that the center of the subway map is not the central station, but instead regional railway station Friedrichstraße. And the map is splattered with subway and S-Bahn stations like “Nordbahnhof”

I think schools need to be MUCH more strict when it comes to bullying... Over here it's not all that big I guess, but it seems it's totally NORMAL in the US.. yesterday I was watching 3rd episode of new US comedy "The neighbors" and the kids went back to school and immediately got picked on, and they were just making plans how to NOT attract attention to bullies.. Like if you punch someone, the bullies might not see you as a weak person and will divert their attention to the one you punched... Yeah uh... Why not just send a message to the bullies instead as a teacher and make it clear that you will not have it? In the US I think too many people just consider it part of life, and believe it will make you a better person... Just ask Jesus for forgiveness they think, and all is well again.. It doesn't work like that in the rest of the (normal) world . On the internet bullying is even bigger! I was in a stickam session with a girl who likes kigurimi and lots of people do too and join in the fun. so some guy comes in and starts calling her a fat cow... I was like...what possesses a person to just say that? If you don't have anything nice to say, crawl back into your HOLE and shut your face! If you don't like what you're seeing, then get out. Fortunately the girl just ignored it and he went away, but some other people I know wouldn't have done so great
