Wernigerode Kirchstrasse

HSB's line through Wernigerode is quite curios, keeping away from the main road to the Harz mountains. At many places it is near smaller roads, and in some cases, it actually is on the road. In the Kirchstraße (literally church street; beware, Wernigerode has two of them. This is the one in Hasserode), trains and cars share the road for about fifty meters. The road is too narrow to allow trains and cars at the same time, so the entire stretch is designated as a railroad crossing. Apparently, dangerous situations can be avoided because the trains travel only at 10 km/h and cars are limited to walking speed.

I'd have preferred to shoot a steam train here, but I misread the schedule and ended up with this DMU instead. They have proven quite useful on the lesser-used parts of the HSB network and on the commuter lines to Nordhausen, and are an interesting design, but in the end, they are just not as interesting as a steam train.
